The West side of the Parthenon from West
Three metopes on the entablature (on top of the columns) of the West side of the Parthenon are visible. Behind the outside columns the West frieze is visible on top of the West porch columns. The West frieze shows part of a cavalcade which continues round the corners of the building, moving towards the inspection of the sacred peplos shown on the East frieze. Some riders are already on horseback (left), others prepare themselves and their horses for the procession (right). The composition conveys the movement and excitement of the occasion, with skillfully varied details of dress and pose.
